CASA DAS ÁFRICAS

  • Actions in Africa and in Brazil: Casa das Áfricas carries out activities in Africa giving priority to places where studies have been made by researchers of the House. It is part of our aim to make it possible for the scholars to return or to compensate the people and countries where they carried out their research in some way. In Brazil, our actions aim at two goals: to raise awareness in Brazilian society of the diverse cultural expressions in Africa; to support African residents in the Brazil, especially students and immigrants.
  • Formation: the House contributes to broadening knowledge of African societies by supporting the training of teachers and students, promoting workshops, courses and debates. Through our collection, which consists of different media, we make available to the public, information concerning the cultures, histories and contemporary questions of the various regions of Africa.
  • Publications: Casa das Áfricas publishes original and translated materials about Africa and proposes publication to various Brazilian publishing houses. In 2003 the work of Amadou Hampate Ba, ‘Amkoullel o menino fula’, was published in partnership with Palas Athena Editions. In 2004 Denise Dias Barros’ book “Itinerários da Loucura em Território Dogon” was published in partnership with Fiocruz Editions. The book was Awarded the Brazilian literary Prize Jabuti, third place in the category Education, Psychology and Psychoanalisis.
